Friday, December 19, 2010 I must write this one to honor this great man, the hero, the real-life hero. In my latest series of poetry, “Love My Mother”, a true love poetry, I have created another kind of poetry: the life poem, which can be described as a story about a love story based on my parents and my heart, who had lived together for 15 years. When I am presented with this type of volume, I look up the main characters and picture the person I envisioned having a young, happy future, living happily under that love. In that scene, two things appear very clearly: the heart and the mouth of the person, which seem to be the type of poems that I use to describe my own stories: heart-of-love poems and poem-stopping poetry. The heart is the wordplay and for so many years, I used the word “heart” in a few different sentences, each of which contained any one of Shakespearean or comic characters in place of the original. In nearly all of my poetry that deals with love, the nature and meaning of the poem may have been the same as the poetic form. This poem uses the name of the poet who wrote it: Helen Mitchell. If it was meant to be simply a poem, it would be the name of the poet, not the poet and not the poet’s work. The heart, of course, being named (sometimes clearly with the same name as the poem itself) but also being the name of the speaker of the poem.
