In China, cancer risks are increasing in all patients treated according to modern medical treatment. The incidence and mortality of lung cancer have been elevated since the earliest times after the introduction of local cancer registries \[[@CR5]–[@CR7]\]. Xu et al. conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies conducted up to 200 years ago that reported the trends of lung cancer incidence and mortality in 2265 cases of lung cancer from 2000 to 2013. There was a strong association between lung cancer and risk factors such as cigarette smoking, carotid disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) \[[@CR8], [@CR9]\]. The findings suggested that higher cigarette smoking is a significant risk factor in patients with lung cancer \[[@CR10]\]. Our meta-analysis, however, did not support the conclusion that consumption of cigarette is a major risk factor for lung cancer.
