Nils Plambeck on “Authenticity in the Workplace”
——————
Lead: Meet Nils, a small-time retail owner whose sales figures have been declining, yet customers remain loyal to his business and rave about customer service. In your role as a small business consultant, explore what authenticity could contribute to this business turnaround, both in customer interaction and marketing strategies. Authenti(c)ty and small business success is a complex topic worthy of in-depth discussion. Authentic leadership involves cultivating trust, building transparency, and fostering connection among customers and clients [citation]. It can set the foundation for strong organizational cultures [citation], employee engagement [citation], and ultimately improved performance and profitability [citation]. Therefore, exploring how to foster a culture of authenticity can play a valuable role in revitalizing businesses facing a decline, such as Nils’. [Cue case discussion here. As companies evolve their corporate cultures over time, they often strive to achieve authentic and transparent workforces as key goals for increasing employee satisfaction, retention rates and operational success as a whole (Robertson-Wilson, 2006). However, achieving these targets can be difficult, with varying results depending on individual organizations’ motivations, behaviors and the specific market environments within which these work. Authenticity has recently taken the wikipedia reference in the business conversation again as an elusive yet powerful ingredient to achieving better work cultures which has caught attention across business spheres around the world (Kaufman et al, 2013, Schaufeli et al, 2014, Youssef & Bouzani, 2020). “Realness in the workplace”
As my work partner Nila observed in a recent performance review, I believe I often wear multiple masks as an employee at “X,” my current place of work. I’ve learned long ago that if you don’t play your role perfectly as a successful employee with all your bosses or subordinates watching, there are plenty of opportunities available outside for those that can wear multiple masks, but that come with some costs of wearing a mask and being less comfortable at work or with others around me because I always feel fake. In many ways this creates tension or conflict around what the ideal person or identity for my roles is; my own preferences and personal views of myself become secondary in the name of adapting, accommodating to the roles required of me.” I personally love this question of authenticity in the workplace because I have struggled deeply and personally on this subject. On one level it helps me reflect on how much time, mental focus, or effort to conformity has lost to a situation like mine; and also as a way to identify, validate my beliefs and thoughts with a friend.
